Notes on the Greek NT Reading Plan

This reading plan is designed for the Christian to read approximately forty verses a week in the Greek New Testament, resulting in the New Testament being completely read through in 190 weeks, or approximately every 3 ½ years.  More advanced readers can read two sections a week, resulting in the reader completing the New Testament in under two years.  Reading three sections a week—merely around 17 verses a day—will result in the New Testament being read through every fourteen months.  Reading a section a day, instead of one a week, will result in reading through the New Testament almost twice a year.

While this program is designed in approximately forty verse segments, considerations of appropriate places to break one’s reading took precedence over creating segments of exactly forty verses each.  Thus, some segments are longer, but these are usually balanced by succeeding segments that are comparatively shorter.

While this reading plan was designed for the Greek New Testament, it will work equally well for reading the Latin New Testament or reading Scripture in another ancient language; for reading the New Testament in a modern language other than one’s native tongue; for adults reading the English Bible with limited English proficiency; and for children who have just recently grown in their language ability to the point where they can read God’s infallible Word.

The reading sections were designed from the Greek Textus Receptus; they therefore include inspired passages such as Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11.  While the plan can be effectively utilized with texts not associated with the Textus Receptus, they fit best for use with the Greek TR or at least a Majority Text Bible, the Latin Bible of Tremellius-Junius-Beza (although the Latin Vulgate is essentially a TR Bible and can be read effectively with this plan), or with modern language Received Text Bibles such as the English King James Version or the Spanish Reina-Valera.

The plan leaves room at the end to record passages of Scripture one is memorizing and for date to review passages one has already memorized.

May God the Father use His holy Word to lead His adopted children to see the glory of Christ in the Scriptures by His Spirit, and be transformed thereby, as they read, study, memorize, meditate, and obey it (2 Corinthians 3:18).

In the Greek New Testament (Textus Receptus, ed. Scrivener), the name of the Gospels are preceded by Κατά, explaining why they are in the accusative. Paul’s letters, including Hebrews, are preceded by Πρός (e. g., Παύλου τοῦ ἀποστόλου ἡ πρὸς Ῥωμαίους ἐπιστολή, Παύλου τοῦ ἀποστόλου ἡ πρὸς Κορινθίους ἐπιστολὴ πρώτη, Παύλου τοῦ ἀποστόλου ἡ πρὸς Κορινθίους ἐπιστολὴ δευτέρα … Παύλου τοῦ ἀποστόλου ἡ πρὸς Ἑβραίους ἐπιστολή).  The general epistles (including Jude with its -α ending) have genitive forms: Ἰακώβου ἐπιστολὴ καθολική, Πέτρου ἐπιστολὴ καθολικὴ πρώτη, Πέτρου ἐπιστολὴ καθολικὴ δευτέρα, Ἰωάννου ἐπιστολὴ καθολικὴ πρώτη, Ἰωάννου ἐπιστολὴ δευτέρα, Ἰωάννου ἐπιστολὴ τρίτη, Ἰούδα ἐπιστολὴ καθολική, while the book of Revelation is Ἀποκάλυψις τοῦ ἁγίου Ἰωάννου τοῦ θεολόγου.
