Charles Journeycake: A Light for His People

Step into the 1800s and meet Charles Journeycake, chief of the Delaware and a Baptist preacher who spoke boldly for his people. This living history lesson, A Light for His People, brings Journeycake’s story to life for students in grades 1–12. Students will learn about faith, perseverance, and the witness of Native Christians who followed Christ while facing removal, loss, and hardship.

Watch: Baptists on the Trail of Tears

Most people have heard of the Cherokee Trail of Tears, but not all realize that many other tribes—Delaware, Shawnee, Creek, and more—suffered similar forced removals. In this short video, Baptists on the Trail of Tears, students gain a deeper understanding of how Baptists walked alongside Native Americans during this dark chapter, sharing in their suffering and offering gospel hope.

This video is part of our Indian Missions series, which currently includes lessons on Isaac McCoy and Charles Journeycake, with more to come.

Living History Narrative

Written as a living history story for students in grades 1–12, Journeycake’s experiences as both a tribal leader and a Baptist minister are presented in a way that makes history vivid and memorable. His sermons, leadership, and heartfelt appeals for his people come alive on the page.

Writing Connections

In addition to history, this lesson integrates a language arts component designed for different age levels:

  • 1st–3rd grades: Play with sound through onomatopoeia found in the story (e.g., hoofbeats, wind, voices).

  • 4th–6th grades: Practice perspective writing, imagining the scene through the eyes of Journeycake.

  • 7th–12th grades: Develop skills in persuasive reasoning, weighing choices and arguments.

A commonplace book / journal template is included so students can record narrations, reflections, and writing exercises at home or in the classroom.
